Shooter
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Danny Glover, Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Ned Beatty.
Director: Antoine Fuqua
Rating: R (strong graphic violence and some language)
Plot: Retired Marine Scout Sniper Bobby Lee Swagger (Wahlberg) lives quietly in the hills of Montana when he is approached by a high ranking member of the US Government who wants his help to foil an assassination attempt on the president. A series of betrayals and plot within plot “game” is set off when the assassination goes wrong. Swaggar vows revenge and a bloody struggle for the truth ensues.
Notes: Mark Wahlberg (and his brother, Donnie (Band of Brothers)) are two of my favorite actors. Mark turns in another thrilling performace in Shooter and fans of the action/adventure genre will be most pleased by the stunts and combat action of this movie. The script is based off a book called “Point of Impact,” by Stephen Hunter. The novel dealt with a Marie sniper in Vietnam who faces a series of trials. The movie updates the book to contemparary times, but leaves in some elements (such as Swagger losing his spotter in much the same fashion as the sniper depicted in the novel.)
My Rating: I really enjoyed this film. Four Goons out of Five.
